New Arrivals: Heckles and Gunther!

We’re thrilled to welcome two feathery new residents to Surge Sanctuary — meet Heckles and Gunther, a pair of Silkie Bantam cockerels who have captured our hearts from day one!

A safe, loving home for rescue cockerels

After completing their quarantine period, Heckles and Gunther moved into a specially renovated area beside our main chicken village. This space has been designed to meet their unique needs, giving them a safe, enriching environment to explore, relax, and thrive.

Gunther: Our brave blind cockerel

Gunther is blind, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying life to the fullest. He relies on his incredible sense of hearing — often listening out for Heckles calling when there are tasty treats around! When he’s happy, you’ll see him head bopping or spinning in excitement.
To help him navigate his surroundings, we’ve placed small bricks near his food and water bowls. Since arriving in June, he’s adapted beautifully and shows us every day just how resilient animals can be when given compassion and care.

Heckles: A loving brother with a big personality

Heckles has a deformed foot, but that doesn’t slow him down one bit! He loves digging in the woodchip, exploring, and snuggling up close to Gunther. The two brothers share an unbreakable bond — it’s heartwarming to watch how Heckles looks out for Gunther and how they comfort each other.

Our volunteers have fallen head over heels for these two! It’s common to find someone sitting quietly with Heckles and Gunther in between mucking out sessions, offering gentle company and extra cuddles.
