An update on our Big Barn Fundraiser

For the past three years, our supporters have been helping us work towards one of the biggest projects in Surge Sanctuary’s history: building a spacious, purpose‑built barn for our resident cows. Today, we’re excited to share that construction is officially underway.

This new barn will transform winter life at the sanctuary - not only for the animals who rely on it, but also for the volunteers who care for them every single day, in all weathers and without a single day off.

A safer, warmer winter for our residents

The barn will provide a dry, sheltered space during the harshest months of the year, protecting our herd from the cold, wind and rain. It will also give our volunteers a safer, more practical environment for feeding, mucking out and carrying out daily care routines.

In October 2024, the main structure of the barn was erected. This week, the concrete base was poured - a huge milestone that has been emotional for all of us to witness. Seeing the building take shape after years of planning and fundraising feels incredibly special.

Every donation, no matter the size, has helped bring us to this moment.

Honouring Juliet’s memory

We are deeply grateful to one supporter who made a significant donation in loving memory of her daughter, Juliet, who adored animals. To honour her compassion, the new building will be named Juliet’s Barn.

Her kindness will live on here at the sanctuary, offering warmth, safety and comfort to animals for many years to come.

What happens next?

With the concrete now laid, the next stage of the project includes:

  • rebuilding the muddy banks around the structure for safe access

  • installing a robust drainage system to prevent flooding

  • adding a concrete ramp for hay and straw deliveries

  • fitting fencing and gates to keep residents safe

  • installing water troughs, hay feeders and cow brushes

  • adding hurdles to create stalls and cosy sleeping areas

The predicted remaining cost is £15,000. This barn has been a dream since we moved to the property in 2020, and once complete, it will allow us to rescue more farmed animals in the future - giving them a warm, secure home alongside our existing herd.

The final stage will be the electrical installation, and we’ll share an update when that appeal launches. We’re also exploring grant funding for rescued farmed animals, though opportunities are limited.

Help us build our barn

If you’d like to support the next phase of the barn, donations of any amount make a real difference. This barn will change lives - keeping animals safe through winter, supporting our volunteers, and opening the door to future rescues.

Thank you for helping us build a sanctuary where every life is valued.
