New Arrival: Walter - and a loving tribute to Victoria

Recently, we said goodbye to our beloved goose Victoria. Her loss has left a huge hole at the sanctuary, especially for Violet, who had been her closest companion. Victoria was with us for five years and was adored by every volunteer. She greeted visitors with enthusiasm (especially if they brought her favourite greens), admired herself in the mirror, splashed in every water bowl she could find, and shouted proudly at anyone who would listen. She loved grooming volunteers, waddling around with her friends and enjoying every moment of the wonderful life she deserved. She was a big personality with an even bigger heart, and the sanctuary hasn’t felt the same without her.

In the middle of our heartbreak, we were contacted by our friends at Brinsley Animal Rescue about a goose who needed a home - and who, just like Violet, had recently lost his companion. His name is Walter.

Walter is an incredible 20 years old, and he had been living alone after the loss of his friend. We knew immediately that he and Violet might be exactly what each other needed.

Their introduction has gone beautifully. On their very first day together, Walter followed Violet everywhere as she proudly showed him all her favourite hangout spots. They settled down side‑by‑side to share some lettuce, and it was clear from the start that Walter absolutely adores her.

Seeing Violet with a new friend has been bittersweet - a reminder of how much we miss Victoria, but also a comfort to know Violet is no longer alone.

Remembering Victoria

Victoria lived an extraordinary life. Rescued as a young goose by a kind woman who gave her a wonderful start, she later made her way to us, where she found lifelong friends and a forever home. She brought joy to everyone who met her, and her absence is felt deeply across the sanctuary.

We will always be grateful for the years we shared with her. We will all miss you so much, sweet Victoria.

Thank you so much for all your kind words following Victoria’s passing. Your compassion means the world to us, and we’re grateful to share this new chapter with you.
